Best Espresso Grinders for Former Baristas

Not too long ago we shared some thoughts on good espresso machines for former baristas. Today we’ve got a great list of grinders to go with those brewers!

Eureka Mignon Specialita

This is a compact option that offers a lot of value for those used to working with commercial machines. While it won’t produce the volume that a commercial grinder will, this espresso grinder has the features you will want to create consistent espresso grounds for your morning latte or americano. The stepless grind adjust gives you that precision control needed for truly nailing your shots, and the digital display and timer help you get that consistent volume needed to pull those shots over and over. This grinder also comes in a variety of fun colorways and has a small footprint, so it’ll definitely fit alongside any machine well.

The biggest downside to this machine is that the grounds tend to clump up a bit on the finer end of its grinding range. This can be mitigated with distribution tools that help break up clumps, and definitely isn’t a deal breaker for us.

Eureka Mignon Oro Single Dose

While this grinder is similar to the Mignon Specialita above, it differs in some key ways. First, as you can probably tell, this is a single dose grinder. This means that you measure your needed beans prior to grinding, then add just those beans to the hopper. The grinder then grinds through those beans completely. The tilt to this grinder is there to help ensure that the chamber is completely cleared with no grounds retention. This single-dose workflow is perfect for a user that likes to keep a few different coffees on hand to try, or who likes a variety of different types of shots and drink styles and who needs different volumes of beans each time.

This grinder also has larger burrs than the Specialita, featuring a 60mm burr set to the Specialita’s 55mm burrs. This means that the Oro Single Dose will grind just a bit faster than the Specialita.

The downside here, of course, is the slower workflow. This won’t be an issue for many espresso hobbyists and former baristas, in fact many users much prefer this style of grinder.

Fiorenzato Allground

The Allground is a great option for a high-volume, multi-purpose grinder. This grinder can grind for espresso as well as filter coffee, giving it more range than other grinders on this list. It also has a large hopper, perfect for anyone who is grinding frequently for multiple shots. Its micro-stepped adjustments also help to split the difference between the precision of stepless adjustment and more traditional stepped grinders. While it’s not the best option for single-dosing, this is a really solidly built and reliable grinder that will work great for the current or former coffee professional that wants to grind for slow-brew and espresso on one unit.

Eureka Atom 75

The Atom 75 is Eureka’s high-end option for home and commercial users. This grinder features a 75mm burr set that grinds at lightning speeds, as well as lots of sound insulation and programmability. It also has a portafilter fork that lets you set and forget the portafilter, giving you hands free operation while you prep the rest of your coffee equipment. The Atom 75 really represents the grinder that will be most familiar to former baristas on this list, as it grinds incredibly fast, but quieter than what you might have worked with in the past. The only real downsides to this grinder are that it is the most expensive option on our list, and it works so fast that it can make it difficult to dial in for newer users. If you have experience dialing in grinders then we really can’t hesitate to recommend this fantastic high-speed home espresso option.
